Details:
I will discuss my view of historical and current Artificial Intelligence research, what the main problems are, and why this research has not made much progress in 50 years - all in (I hope) language suitable for a general audience. This includes a short but sharp introduction to Bizarre Systems.
I will then propose a new direction - a bottom-up, Holistic kind of AI based on Model Free Methods - and motivate why the shift is essential. I will only briefly touch upon the specific path my company is pursuing since it's discussed in some detail at the Artificial Intuition website. Finally I may briefly discuss SkyNet like scenarios and the Singularity, but I reserve the right to replace that segment with something else since it's much more speculative than the rest of the talk.
The MeetUp will be video recorded. I'll be giving this talk at least 8 times this winter at various conferences but you all are my home audience so this is where I'd like to record it. There will be quite a lot of time for a discussion after my main presentation.
This is the most important and powerful talk I am currently giving. I have received quite a lot of positive feedback on it already. You can read a much longer abstract for this talk at the Humanity Plus MeetUp site .
I last gave a talk to this audience about Model Free Methods on Nov. 23, 2008. I have added some introductory material and some recent results, and I've had a year to improve the clarity of the message. I think you'll enjoy this version even if you attended the talk a year ago.
A New Target for AI Research
