Here's a hypothetical artificial intelligence: it can read, understand, and explain laws, scientific articles, and anything else factual but esoteric. Would such an AI be a person?

"understand"?
would it be able to think up new interpretations? why would it be limited to esoteric type of facts? how would it be able to understand complex things with out understanding "common social knowledge"? |

"Person" isn't really shooting very high. I suspect such a configuration would be doing more than most people I have met (maybe more than I do most of the time). If you are asking if such a thing should be granted the rights and privileges granted a person (again you aren't shooting very high)… should they have a 1 in 10 chance of being unemployed?, 1 in 6 chance of not having access to health care? Or maybe you are asking if they should be required to obey laws as applied to individual humans, fight for citizenship, pick lettuce, pass a high school exit exam? Agree not to kill any other "person"?

To the person who started this thread:
Please be so kind as to explain the rhetoric behind and supporting your questions. What motivated you to ask these questions of this group? What is the purpose of this line of reasoning? Be honest and open and expose your point of view and the philosophy/cosmology upon which it is based. Without full disclosure, comments and questions exist only as manipulation. What motivated you to ask these questions of this group?I was discussing AIs with a friend, he was assuming that anything smart enough to summarize advanced reading (which it wouldn't be limited to) would have enough brains to be a person. I want AI summarizers for everyone, but I don't want to create slaves. I figured a good place to ask is that AI group Monica suggested I join (this one). Edited by M.W. on Nov 11, 2009 9:25 AM |
